Ratio Marketing Strategies was founded with a simple rallying cry: strategy should not be created in a vacuum or as an afterthought. So we set about to create something new.

Founder Dan Reed has spent almost two decades as a strategist for healthcare brands. He’s worked on some of the largest brands in the pharmaceutical industry, including Lipitor, Humira, Avastin, Jardiance, Revlimid and Victoza. He’s also helped design marketing strategies for hospitals, diagnostics, medical devices and smaller pharmaceutical brands in many disease states.

Doing this work at traditional agencies, he saw the power of great insights and ideas to drive brands, but also how the typical agency structure can make achieving that strategic focus harder . Agencies are built to develop creative ideas and execute them tactically, and the relatively few planners and strategists are often spread thin, limiting their voice and impact.

Clients who feel they need greater depth of insight often turn to consultants, but frequently run into a different problem: consultants can be great thinkers, but their focus typically stops short of applying their knowledge to creative and tactical execution . So their PowerPoint decks end up as expensive bits of theory that—without additional work by their clients—fail to drive the business forward.

But we also partner with the creative agency (either by introducing our clients to trusted partners or by working with the agency of their choice) to ensure the strategy is pulled through into the brand’s creative execution.

Why “Ratio”?

We believe in ideas that have depth, and so we liked that our name means more than one thing. In fact, it stands for three principles that drive our business and everything we do.

  1. A ratio is a constant that defines the relationship between two numbers or objects. We believe in consistency in the way we work with our clients. What we say, we do. What we promise, we deliver. You don't have to wonder which Ratio you'll be getting from one project to the next: everyone who works for or with us is held to the same standard, and we put money on the line to ensure you're satisfied with what you're getting from us. All we ask in exchange is that you bring that same consistency in how you work with us.

  2. The Golden Ratio is a simple number that undergirds some of the most beautiful creations of man and nature. It is behind everything from spiraling seashells to the Parthenon. In just the same way, we believe clear, true insights can lead to market-moving strategies, that simple creative expression and honest writing can elevate brands, and that precision is the foundation of greatness.

  3. Ratio is also the Latin word for "reason", and our highest goal is that we together apply reason to the increasingly irrational world of medical marketing.
